SIGNAL THE START
Mental Wellness and Recovery Hub in Western Jamaica

Creating safe spaces, breaking stigma, and restoring hope.

We’re building community-centered recovery programs and mental wellness hubs across Jamaica, providing accessible care and breaking down barriers to mental health support.

The Beginning

Chance 2 Mental Wellness and Recovery Hub Jamaica Foundation (CMWRHJ) is birthed out of a shared vision of Chance Rehabilitation Centre in St. James Jamaica, which has been in Operation since 2010, and is now in need of comprehensive physical covering to better meet the needs of the growing mentally ill population. Since 2010, this facility in Montego Bay, has demonstrated care. Presently, its clients are spread across different locations depending on the severity of their cases. These clients seek its services through referral agencies such as social services, health care thrusts, community mental health teams, education authorities, probation services and varying other sources, including family members.

The Present

With the shift of mental health care from hospitals and large institutions into the community, there is a treatment gap due to the shortage of adequate resources in the community. There remains a need for continued improvement in the availability and quality of community mental health resources. There is also a significant need for quality residential rehabilitative care, and related social services in this region (Integrating Mental Health in primary care and integrated collaborative primary care model-the Jamaican experience, West Indian Journal, Vol. 60, no.4 June 2011).

The Future

According to the Jamaica Health and lifestyle survey 2007-2008 one in every five Jamaicans is depressed. In addition the international standard ratio for service of psychiatrist to clients is 1:150; in Jamaica it is 1:1,582. (Jamaica Laggin in Basic Mental-Health Services) The Gleaner June 29,2018.

When constructed, Chance 2 Mental Wellness & Recovery Hub Jamaica will fix this malady.

Location: The road to site of Chance 2 Mental Wellness & Recovery Hub Jamaica (CMWRHJ) is Spanish Hill, Haughton Court, Hanover.
